Marvel’s The Punisher: And Lessons On Spiritual Warfare, Part 4

Welcome back to this blog series on Marvel’s The Punisher. Here’s the fourth lesson on spiritual warfare I learned from the series:

Lesson 4: Never leave a man down behind

I think the thing I loved most about Frank was that he never left a wounded man behind. Even if it meant giving up his own life.

Although he had a love-hate relationship at first with David, Frank comes to be friends with him. He spends time with his family and check in on them although he was using them as leverage against David at first. And he’s the first to break through to David’s son and help him make a connection with other people instead of take his anger out on them.

He went back for Curtis twice. The first time was when Lewis beat Curtis down with his own prosthetic leg and then strapped a bomb to him. Curtis had gone to see about Lewis by visiting another veteran. He finds the veteran in his house, dead, wrapped in plastic. While Curtis is investigating Lewis comes in the house and then they fight. Curtis is bested by Lewis only to wake up tied up with a bomb strapped to him and Frank trying to get him loose. Frank saves Curtis’ life by getting Lewis to tell him how to deactivate the bomb.

The second time Frank goes back for Curtis is when Billy goes after him. Frank tries to shoot Billy from the window of his apartment although he winds up hitting Curtis instead. Although Billy could have killed Curtis, Frank refused to give in and just leave Curtis behind. He breaks Billy down just like he did Lewis and saves Curtis.

The last time Frank stayed behind was with Dinah – the special agent. He held her in his lap and talked to her while he heard the sirens coming. I thought “Man, he knows he’s about to get arrested. Why not just wrap something around her or leave her with the two other survivors from the shootout?” But that wasn’t Frank. Frank refused to leave the woman who saved his life behind.

In spiritual warfare, we’re instructed to pray for saints everywhere. It’s like linking shields. When soldiers link armor together like that, it makes it a lot harder for the enemy to penetrate each individual soldier. Sometimes wounded soldiers die because they were left behind by those who could have covered the soldier until they got out of enemy territory.

I saw a video a few years ago. A baby elephant got separated from it’s herd when some lionnesses hunted them down. The mother must have pitched a fit because a few minutes later all of the herd came back and  saved the baby from the wild cats. Before they did I thought for sure that the baby was as good as dead. But it wasn’t. Momma came back with the herd and saved the day.

Let us be like that with our brothers and sisters with Christ. That we stay behind with the ones who are wounded or get separated from the herd. That we never give up on one another.
