Revisions

Romans 12: 2, NLT: “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”

Today I’m reminded of when I wrote my first book. I couldn’t have picked a better editor. She knew the Word and challenged me to strengthen the case I was building for Christ. She also pointed out unfinished points and errors. Because of her keen eye and diligence I had a book that showcased my best writing.

But as a writer and an artist, I think fewer things can wreck your soul than seeing and hearing criticism about your work. A lot of people think artists are sensitive, weird, self-absorbed people. Many of us are all 3, but many of us live out a calling that most people “don’t get”. So I think deep down inside we believe what we have to offer and who we are just isn’t good enough by the world’s standards. So when we face criticism – even if it’s only to make us better – it confirms that belief.

I’m thankful to tell you that today I can face constructive criticism with far more grace than the Afi I was just a few years ago. I’m a better writer, artist and person because of it. I’m also a content single because of it. I don’t know who this is for, but it just is not God’s way to give you the blessing you’re asking for while you refuse to change and give up the habits and character flaws that would choke the life out of that blessing.

I guess the hardest part about revisions is that it’s ongoing. In the face of it writers ask “How can this book possibly talk about everything I need to get out of my mind?” Artists ponder “There’s no way this one piece of work can really say all I need it to say”. Perhaps that’s why we create a series, or new editions, or collections. I don’t know. But I do know that each time, when you allow the Lord to renew your mind, you get better and become more skilled.

Be transformed by the RENEWING (a continual process, not an event) of your mind. Be adventurous and let God mold you into the spouse you need to be, the person He dreamed you’d become, and the Christian who is always ready to answer the question “How can I get what you have?”

Bio PictureAfter a series of baffling life challenges, narrowly missing the tragic tsunami of 2011 in Japan, and a near-death experience, Afi (pronounced Ah-fee) had a wake-up call. Since then she’s been chasing after God and His purpose for her life. Now she loves to make God’s Word “come to life” by blogging and combining her artwork with scriptures.
