Natural Hair Health: Heat Damage
If you need natural hair care tips, I have some to share. I’ve had natural hair since 2009. It’s been quite a journey. Here, I’ll share my successes and failures on the road to loving the hair God gave me!
See the picture below? It’s ALL MY HAIR…no extensions or chemicals. That press out looks GOOD, right? Well, I’m still coddling heat damaged hair because of it. And that was in February of 2013!
Your hair only grows so fast and I didn’t want to crop my hair and just start over. Plus, I’m active duty so I knew once my hair got to about 2-3 inches it would be way too bulky for me to pass for “in regulation” while in uniform. And THEN (if that wasn’t enough) I was on deployment in Djibouti, Africa so I had limited resources to keep my hair neat. Luckily Kokobe (a beautiful, wonderful, God-filled woman from Ethiopia) nursed my hair back to life a little. *Sigh*. So what’s a single, busy woman who loves her curly hair to do?
Well, I started doing some research on styles that are best for transitioning to natural.
For the past few weeks I’ve been doing perm rod sets, which stretch the hair out so it looks like an old school roller set on relaxed hair. It seems to hold up pretty well when you work out (and that’s important because we can’t skip workouts just to maintain our hair)! If you like how it looks, and you have long, natural but heat damaged hair, ask your stylist if they can do this for you while it grows back in it’s natural state.
