Hoping for Motherhood on Mother’s Day

Today in church, one of our pastors preached the sermon on mothers – of course! I have to give him credit – at the end of the sermon, he did an altar call for prayer for all mothers, including women who hope to be mothers but currently are not. That hit close enough to home for me being single, never married with no children. Why? Because most married people who struggled through singleness forget all about what it was like – falling out on the floor praying for God to send them the right one. And the ones who married young have no clue what its like to deal with prolonged unwanted singleness.

But I know, and I’m dedicating this blog post to other single women who are seeking God for His will concerning marriage. I’m reminded of Hannah. She was already married but barren. But her desire for a baby – a baby boy to be exact – would not let her go. Her situation changed, though, when she prayed this prayer:

1 Samuel 1: 10 – 11, NLT: “Hannah was in deep anguish, crying bitterly as she prayed to the Lord. ¹¹And she made this vow: “O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, if you will look upon my sorrow and answer my prayer and give me a son, then I will give him back to you. He will be yours for his entire lifetime, and as a sign that he has been dedicated to the Lord, his hair will never be cut”

Hannah was at the end of being taunted by her husband’s second wife who had baby after baby…after baby. And don’t we as singles get tired of married people who don’t understand how we feel say cruel things like “Stop getting in your own way” or “Maybe it’s God’s will for you remain single” or “Maybe God doesn’t feel you’re ready”.

But I have good news or you. If you’re a single woman who deeply desires to date and marry God’s way, then have children and dedicate them to God, you’re in good company! Follow Hannah’s example and take your concerns, frustration or sadness to God. As many times as you need to. And in the meantime, remember to honor those women in your life who “mothered” you!
