Single Christian Women: Do You Fear the Future?

“She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.” Proverbs 31:25

I used to think that the example of the Proverbs 31 woman was for married women. I pretty much thought of her as Mrs. Proverbs 31, THE blueprint of behavior, attitude and lifestyle that married women should follow. Not an example that single women could learn from. But man, was I wrong.

As I studied the Proverbs 31 woman, though, I found that there were so many things besides her marital status that about her that defined who she was as a woman. At the heart of her identity was a deep fear of the Lord. Interpreters and teachers of this passage often focus on all that she accomplished, which makes her the example for womanhood. But at the end of the passage, we find out that she’s worthy of praise because she fears the Lord. Consequently, I came to the conclusion that all her other accomplishments stemmed from her relationship with God.

For Single Christian women…I would say don’t strive to be Mrs. Proverbs 31. Look at her character, accomplishments and identity (which was deeply rooted in God) to see how you can integrate the success clues she leaves behind into your own life. Most importantly, strive to be a woman who “laughs at the future”. Because you are prepared. Prepared to live well as a single. Prepared to live well as a wife and mother. Prepared to be all that God has called you to be. God doesn’t define your value by your marital status or by the desires that go unfulfilled in your life. He defines your value by the fact that Jesus paid the ultimate ransom in exchange for your CHOICE to have eternal life. He clothes you in strength and dignity as you sit at His feet and have a relationship with Him. As strong as your relationship with Him is, is as strongly you have no need to fear the future – whatever it may bring.

If you never married, would you still have had a well-lived, fulfilling and meaningful life?

If the answer is no, then we’ve got some work to do. I invite you to join us on our next “Let’s Talk About It” Chat Night in November 2014. Visit the information page to sign up for the next call and to receive call-in details.
