When God Still Hasn’t Shown Up
Psalm 27: 13 – 14, AMP: “[What, what would have become of me] had I not believed that I would see the Lord’s goodness in the land of the living! Wait and hope for and expect the Lord; be brave and of good courage and let your heart be stout and enduring. Yes, wait for and hope for and expect the Lord.”
I found God 5,000 miles away from “home”.
Here’s the long story made short. By the time I joined the military I knew of God but had no personal relationship with Him. When I joined, I wanted to see the world. It had been a childhood dream and I made up my mind that I was going travel and live abroad when the opportunities came up. And I did. By God’s grace I lived a childhood dream of living and traveling abroad. It changed me. I’d even go so far as to say that God used that experience of being (at times) 5,000 miles away from home, in places with customs unfamiliar to me, and not knowing a soul to grow me up into the woman He created me to be.
The experiences that changed me the most were seeing the living conditions of the poor countries I’d been to. Once I saw poverty – on that level – with my own eyes, it changed my perspective and made me grateful for what God had given me. It made me stop complaining about what I didn’t have.
But it also got me to the place where I had to be honest with myself and God about those desires that are still unfulfilled.
Have you ever had unfulfilled desires of your heart that made you feel like God still hasn’t shown up?
You look at others who get what you beg for without even asking. Or, they didn’t even want it, yet it seems like it was just handed to them? Honestly, human logic and emotion will make you wonder why God won’t show up for you in that way.
So here’s the truth about feeling like God still hasn’t show up for you. God shows up every day that you wake up. He shows up every time you eat a full meal and get a paycheck from your job. He shows up every time you go about your daily life activities without hurt, harm or danger. He shows up when you walk in your closet and put adequate shoes and clothes on your feet. But perhaps He’s waiting for YOU to show up and talk to Him about those unfulfilled desires. Maybe He wants to talk to you directly about those and teach you a thing or two before you receive them.
We can’t say whether or not God will ever give us what we truly desire in our hearts. But we will never know unless we hope for Him to or expect Him to. The ultimate truth about believing God still hasn’t shown up is that it hurts you. I think that’s why David doesn’t even bother to say what would have happened to him if he hadn’t chosen to believe the best of God and chosen to see God’s goodness in his life. Instead, David encourages others to strengthen their hearts, to hope for God and expect God and have courage. Because it takes all of that to believe that God can do what you are hoping despite what you see.
Strengthen your heart to believe fully in God again. Expect God. Hope for His presence and goodness, His provision too. You’ll never know the NEW ways He can show up unless you do.
