Olympics 2016: Michelle Carter Shot Put Champion

The 2016 Olympics is over, but I truly enjoyed watching all of the sports that I could watch. One of my my personal favorites was Michelle Carter Shot Put Champion. I don’t recall seeing this event before the Olympics but her story was awesome. Apparently her dad was a professional athlete and she was a gold medal in the sport that he’d won a silver medal in.

But the reason this was my personal favorite was because as I was telling my mother about Michelle, she tells me that she used to be a shot put champpion in her own right! She didn’t continue the sport, but her raw talent was recognized by school PT teachers and she was asked to participate in a school track meet event.

Imagine my shock when she told me this:

Instagram quotable - mom was a shot put champ (1)

But as a Black woman in America I was proud to see so many women of color succeed in this year’s Olympics. Now, I was happy for Katie Ladecky too. She was one of my favorite performances as she smoked her opponents. I mean…she was turned around on the next lap while they still hadn’t even reached the wall to start the same lap! So I supposed I enjoyed seeing women in general dominate in this year’s competitions.

And Michelle Carter is as personable as she is competitive! I enjoyed her light-hearted teasing about how she now had a gold medal and her dad only had silver.

Here’s to the women who dominated, shined and put out in the 2016 Rio Olympics…
